As part of a 2002 marketing campaign, the plant conservation charity Plantlife chose sea thrift ( " Armeria maritima " ) as the " county flower " of the islands.
Its name may be related to its origin in a marsh-like area, or that its large rose comb resembles the flower of the Marsh Daisy ( " Armeria maritima " ).
There is also a day-flying moth, the thrift clearwing ( " Synansphecia muscaeformis " ); the adult is a bee mimic and the larva feed on thrift ( " Armeria maritima " ).
Its grassland grows plants such as Harebell ( " Campanula rotundifolia " ), Sea Thrift ( " Armeria maritima " ) and Carthusian Pink ( " Dianthus carthusianorum " ) and several species of hawkweed.
On the north-west side of the island there is an area of maritime grassland with abundant thrift ( " Armeria maritima " ), sea beet ( " Beta vulgaris subsp . maritima " ) and tree mallow ( " Lavatera arborea " ).
Of particular note is a small population of perennial flax Linum anglicum, which occurs here towards the northern limit of its distribution range in Great Britain, and locally uncommon plants such as frog orchid Coeloglossum viride, autumn gentian Gentianella amarella, purple milk-vetch Astragalus danicus and thrift Armeria maritima.
